Raj Dewan has been appointed dean of Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies, the university announced Tuesday.

Dewan will begin his role as dean Jan. 13, according to an SU News Release. The Executive Committee of SU’s Board of Trustees approved Dewan’s appointment. He succeeds longtime iSchool dean Liz Liddy, who retired in June after leading the school for a decade. 

A professor of computers and information systems, Dewan currently serves as director of the University of Rochester Simon Business School’s M.S. program in business analytics. Dewan helped recruit students and develop curriculum for the program, which earned a top five national ranking from the TFE Times under his leadership.

The iSchool formed a search committee for its new dean in November 2018. The search was extended in May, when Dean of Libraries David Seaman was appointed interim dean of the school following Liddy’s retirement.

“I have long admired the groundbreaking work being done at Syracuse University’s iSchool,” Dewan said in the release. “I look forward to working with deans and faculty across campus to ensure that our students have access to the information and experiences they seek.”

During his tenure at the Simon Business School, Dewan has served as senior associate dean for faculty and research and chief operating and academic officer, according to the release.

Dewan has also taught interdisciplinary courses in economics and technology at the Simon Business School, including electronic commerce technology, economics of information management and marketing on the Internet. 

“Raj has great expertise in both technology and information analytics and an impressive track record of building academic programs, harnessing the passion and interests of faculty, and truly innovating curriculum in teaching and pursuing relevant research,” said John Liu, interim vice chancellor and provost, in the release. 

Dewan earned his B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi, India in 1980 and a Ph.D. in computers and information systems and operations research from the Simon Business School in 1986.   

Management Science, The Journal of Computing and IEEE Transactions on Computers have published Dewan’s research, according to the release. His research interests include financial information systems, business analytics and the internet industry.
