A new office in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics is looking to help students transition into career or graduate programs.

The Falk College Office of Career Services, which opened this month, provides student-focused services that include career coaching, skills training and networking, Falk Dean Diane Lyden Murphy said in an email.

“Dedicated career staff will help students network their experience to opportunities where they can accomplish real, meaningful work in their professional area of interest,” Murphy said.

Falk Career Services is located in the college’s Office of Student Services and is headed by David Sly, associate director of Career Services.

The primary target for the new office will be students at Falk, James Byrne, assistant dean in the Office of Student Services, said. He said the office will fit in with the Student Services Office’s goal of helping students adjust to life at Syracuse University and then proceed into a career.

The office will also give support to Falk alumni throughout the course of their careers, Sly said. He said the office will work to connect alumni to current students.

“I hope that the interactions that current students have with the career services staff and with alumni will help ensure their awareness that these services exist for them,” Sly said in an email.

He said he hopes that working with alumni will inspire them to stay connected with current students and mentor future Falk students.

Sly will identify projects and priorities for the office to work on and assist with the office budget in his new role, he said.

Falk Career Services hosted two events this month — an opportunity fair on Feb. 1 and a networking mixer last Friday — to introduce students to the services, Sly said.

The office is also planning to host workshops on job and internship applications, as well as building a professional profile online, Sly said in an email.

“I hope the long-term outcome of having a Career Services Office right here in Falk is helping to foster a better sense of community,” he said. “A better feeling for Falk students that Falk College is really interested not only in how they do while they’re a student here but also in their success after they leave.”
