The renovations to Schine Student Center are part of SU’s 20-year Campus Framework plan.

Renovations to Syracuse University’s Schine Student Center will begin in May 2019, the university announced in a Monday SU News release.

SU plans to add seating and dining options to the dining center and expand the central atrium to create a lounge on the main floor, according to the release. More versatile spaces for studying and group meetings will also be added to Schine, according to the release.

The Disability Cultural Center, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the LGBT Resource Center will all be located in a central space, and Schine will receive more physically accessible pathways, per the release.

SU’s Board of Trustees approved the plan at its Nov. 9 meeting, per the release. The renovations are part of the university’s Campus Framework, a 20-year plan for physical campus improvement released under Chancellor Kent Syverud in 2016.

Part of the framework involves building student housing on the 700 block of Ostrom Avenue, where the LGBT Resource Center and The Daily Orange are currently located. The LGBT Resource Center will temporarily be housed on the fifth floor of Bird Library until the Schine renovations are complete.

The estimated completion date of the Schine renovations has not been publicly announced.
