Knutson and Ramirez captured a three set win against UCLA's No. 7-ranked pair of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart.

Syracuse’s top doubles pair of Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez advanced to the second round of the NCAA women’s doubles tennis championships Thursday afternoon with a three set win against UCLA’s No. 7-ranked pair of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart.

Knutson and Ramirez came out firing and took control of the net early on behind Knutson’s powerful serving and Ramirez’s improved net play. With the match tied at one game apiece early on, Knutson and Ramirez reeled off four straight games, breaking the first set wide open and won, 6-2.

Fleming and Hart rebounded in the second set, gaining their footing by grabbing an early 2-1 lead which became 5-2, as the Orange lost multiple key 30-all and deuce points down the stretch. The Bruins held off the Orange who tried to mount a comeback down 5-3 with the serve and closed out the second to force a third set super tiebreaker.

In the super tiebreaker, SU and UCLA traded points with neither team leading by more than two points until the final point. Knutson and Ramirez won the final two points of the match to take the super tiebreaker 10-7.

Knutson said earlier this year that her goal was to reach top 10 in singles and doubles, a feat she is one win in each away from achieving.

Knutson and Ramirez will play tomorrow afternoon after Knutson’s morning singles match.
