How to pass the time over winter break

“The Polar Express” viewing

The Museum of Science and Technology will host several screenings of the classic holiday movie “The Polar Express” in its Bristol IMAX Omnitheater. The family-friendly movie follows a young boy who doubts the existence of Santa Claus until he travels to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. The viewing has taken place for the past 12 years, making it a time-honored area holiday tradition.

When: Every Wednesday to Sunday until Jan. 1 from noon to 1:45 p.m.

Where: Museum of Science and Technology, 500 S. Franklin St.

Cost: For members: $6 for children and seniors and $7 for adults; for non-members: $8 for children and seniors and $10 for adults

Lights on the Lake

This is the 28th year Lights on the Lake has brightened up the holiday season in central New York. The 2-mile drive-through light show features holiday scenes and movie-inspired light displays, including a Land of Oz, a Twinkling Fantasy Forest and a Fairytale Magic grand finale. You can either bring your own car or reserve a minibus for larger groups.

When: Every night through Jan. 7 from 5-10 p.m.

Where: Onondaga Lake Park, Liverpool

Cost: $10 per car Monday to Thursday; $15 per car Friday to Sunday; $24 per minibus (for groups of 17 to 24); $75 per motorcoach (for groups of more than 24)

Noon Year’s Eve

If you or your children can’t stay up until the midnight New Year’s Eve countdown, head to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo to celebrate a little earlier. The zoo will host a celebration on New Year’s Eve that includes a dance party, a sparkling juice toast and a countdown to noon.

When: Dec. 31 from 10:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m.

Where: Rosamond Gifford Zoo, 1 Conservation Place

Cost: Free with zoo admission and free for members

New Year’s Eve 2017 at Marriott Syracuse Downtown

The former Hotel Syracuse will host its annual New Year’s Eve Party “Bootleggers Ball and the Roaring ‘20s.” The celebration will feature live music bands in each of the hotel’s three ballrooms: The Grand Ballroom, the Persian Terrace and the Finger Lakes Ballroom. The event offers photo booths, horse and carriage rides and a balloon drop, and there will be a midnight champagne toast.

When: Dec. 31 to Jan. 1 from 7:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Where: Marriott Syracuse Downtown, 100 E. Onondaga St., Syracuse

“Disney On Ice”

Disney on Ice is returning to Syracuse with its “Dream Big” production in early January. Disney fans can see classic characters including Tinker Bell, Ariel, Rapunzel, Cinderella and Belle, as well as newer Disney characters like Tiana and the “Frozen” crew. Grab tickets to see the characters skate, dance, do acrobatics and retell their stories on the ice.

When: Jan. 4 and 5 at 7 p.m.; Jan. 6 at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Jan. 7 at noon and 4 p.m.

Where: Oncenter War Memorial Arena, 515 Montgomery St.

“Boeing Boeing”

This Tony Award-winning comedy revolves around Bernard, who has three fiancees — none of whom know the others exist. Unexpected events cause the women to arrive at Bernard’s home at the same time. The French play, which has been readapted for an American audience, has some “mild adult themes” that contrast it from family-friendly holiday events.

When: Jan. 12-13 from 8-10 p.m.; Jan. 14 from 2-4 p.m.; Jan. 18-20 from 8-10 p.m.; Jan. 21 from 2-4 p.m.; Jan. 25-27 from 8-10 p.m.

Where: The Central New York Playhouse, 3649 Erie Blvd E.

Cost: Early bird tickets purchased before Jan. 5 are $15 for Thursday and Sunday showings and $17 for Friday and Saturday showings. Tickets purchased after Jan. 5 are $17 for Thursday and Sunday showings and $20 for Friday and Saturday showings.
