This Halloween season’s costume trends reflect popular culture with a scary twist. When choosing last minute costume ideas, stay on trend with this year’s most popular costumes and decorations.

Movies like “IT” and “Wonder Woman” and shows like “Game of Thrones” inspired some of the top sold costumes this year, said Asher Weinstein, marketing manager at Costume SuperCenter.

Weinstein said the most popular costume he’s seen across all ages is Wonder Woman. But the largest trend as reflected in sales came from horror-themed costumes.

“For general themes, were seeing a lot more R-rated costumes,” he said.

For young kids and tweens, the Disney Channel inspires most Halloween costumes. Weinstein said costumes from Disney’s “Descendants” and “Trolls” films are a big trend this year. “Star Wars” also attracted a fan base with Rey and new Jedi costumes.

When it comes to adults with a wider vice for horror, “Game of Thrones” and “Stranger Things” costumes sold very well this season, Weinstein said. Spiderman and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was also popular. But Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s “IT” was a huge hit for both men and women, Weinstein added.

Animated decorations and projected lights are trending more than previous years. Weinstein said he usually sees a spike in sales for projected lights during Christmas time. But this year’s stock of scary attractions revved up this year’s sales.

For last minute tips on Halloween ideas, a mad dash to the store can still save the day. The selection may be less than ideal, Weinstein warned, but there’s still time to have a standout costume this year.  With busy schedules it’s understandable for Halloween to creep up and last minute store trips can be stressful, he said.

A piece of advice from Weinstein: “Don’t wait next year.”
