Former Syracuse University student arrested for Yik Yak threat

A former Syracuse University student who currently lives in Syracuse was arrested and charged after posting an alarming message on Yik Yak, police said.

Another SU student who was alarmed by the Yik Yak post notified the Department of Public Safety about it on Oct. 28. DPS detectives were able to collaborate with Yik Yak, other law enforcement entities and SU’s Information Technology Services team to identify the individual, according to a public safety email sent Wednesday night.

The email did not specify what the former SU student who made the post was charged with.

Hannah Warren, public information officer for DPS, did not immediately respond to an email asking for more information.

Yik Yak is a social media app on which people can post anonymously and have their posts viewed by anyone within a 10-mile radius. Each post is available for a limited time before being taken down.
