The Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University is home to nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students. It offers majors in supply chain management, entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises, marketing management and more, and several of its programs are consistently rated among the best in the country. The Pulp staff interviewed Whitman students to find out just what they like so much about the school.

 

Favorite Class — SOM 122: “Perspectives of Business and Management”

Sam Busco, a sophomore finance and marketing management dual major, called SOM 122: “Perspectives of Business and Management” his favorite class. Every freshman enrolled in the school of management takes this class during their first semester at Syracuse. He said, “It gives students an awesome idea of the different areas of business and how they all relate to each other.”

 

Favorite Study Spot — Team Rooms

Tyler King, a sophomore management major, said that the team rooms in Whitman are the best place to study in the building “because they’re so isolated and quiet and you can really get focused and get your work done.”

Ilona Toth, an undecided sophomore said Whitman isn’t a great place to study unless you can somehow snag a team room.

 

Favorite Professor — Daniel Rice

Busco said professor Daniel Rice, who teaches LPP 255: “Introduction to the Legal System,” is his favorite teacher. He said Rice “keeps the class interested and engaged throughout the class by using real life scenarios to teach aspects of law.”

 

Favorite Assignment — Comparing Business Strategies

In MGT 247: “Introduction to Strategic Management,” King enjoyed an assignment in which students went to three stores: Wegmans, Trader Joe’s and Price Chopper to compare how they use business strategies to differentiate from their competitors. This interested him because he likes to see how businesses work and what strategies companies use to be successful.

 

Outside of Class — Peer Mentor

Outside of class, Toth loves being a peer mentor. Being a mentor means working with groups of first-year and transfer students to help guide their SOM 122: “Perspectives of Business and Management” project and to adapt to college life as well as possible. “I really like it because I know that as a freshman, it’s a big change from high school to college so I wanted to be able to help kids make the change as smooth as possible,” Toth said.

 

Best Overall

“The best thing about Whitman would be the job placement after receiving an undergraduate degree,” Busco said. Through recruitment programs in Whitman, students have the opportunity to mingle with and get hired by top companies such as Ernst & Young, IBM and Unilever.

Toth said the opportunities at Syracuse, and specifically Whitman, are amazing and thinks more students should take advantage of them.

“The best thing about the school overall is how catering the professors, dean, and alumni are to making sure we have a fun and successful time here in Whitman while preparing us for the future,” King said.
