Syracuse University Board of Trustees addresses NCAA report in statement

The entire Syracuse University Board of Trustees will meet on Tuesday to discuss a handful of issues brought up in the NCAA report, per a statement released on behalf of the Board of Trustees on Wednesday afternoon..

The Athletics Committee of the board is also weighing the possibility of an appeal of one or more parts of the decision handed down by the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions. The Board’s Executive Committee and Athletics Committee have already met to discuss issues of the report that may lead to an appeal and will continue to do so, per the release.

In May 2014, the board was involved in an official oversight of the athletics department for the first time because of the creation of the Athletics Committee of the board, per the release. Through the Athletics Committee, the board is weighing appropriate changes to policies and structures, among other areas.

For “many months” before the board and university were permitted to comment publicly on the NCAA’s investigation, the board has been working with SU Chancellor Kent Syverud to make changes that the release said include the creation of the Board Athletics Committee and shifting oversight to the Office of Athletics Compliance to the university’s General Counsel.

Following the Board’s meeting next week, the university expects to release information about additional steps being taken.
