Defender Hilliard transfers to Duke for final year of eligibility

Syracuse defender Tyler Hilliard has transferred to Duke for his final year of eligibility, SU Athletics confirmed on Wednesday evening.

He is an academic senior, but has one year of eligibility left on the field. Hilliard tallied three goals and one assist in 18 starts in 2014. With his departure, SU won’t return each of its three starting defenders from this past season.

Former SU assistant coach Mike Miller is now an assistant coach at Duke, and coached Hilliard for two seasons with the Orange. “Excited to welcome Syracuse transfer Tyler Hilliard to Duke. Can’t wait to work with him again. He is an outstanding student athlete,” Miller tweeted on Wednesday evening.

Hilliard played all 90 minutes of SU’s 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference tournament quarterfinal win over the Blue Devils on Nov. 9.
