Ekblom will not return to Syracuse next season in attempt to play professionally in Norway

Syracuse forward Emil Ekblom will not return to Syracuse for his junior season, SU head coach Ian McIntyre confirmed in a text message to The Daily Orange on Monday evening.

He is no longer in Syracuse, and is currently trying out for professional teams in his home country of Norway, McIntyre said. Ekblom was Syracuse’s top scorer in his first two seasons with the Orange, with 10 and eight goals, respectively.

Ekblom has yet to make a roster, but McIntyre said he will not be returning to Syracuse in the fall. During the 2014 postseason, Ekblom was replaced in the starting lineup by sophomore Alex Halis, who will return to the Orange next season along with sophomore forward Chris Nanco.

Ekblom is the third player this offseason to leave Syracuse early. Junior goalkeeper Alex Bono received a Generation Adidas offer from Major League Soccer and was eventually drafted sixth overall by Toronto FC on Thursday. Junior midfielder Stefanos Stamoulacatos has left a season early to play professionally in Greece.
