The L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science will unveil a new graduate program this fall.

Students will be able to enroll in an online program to earn their Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, with the first class beginning the fall 2014 semester. Ariel DuChene, an assistant dean for external relations at Syracuse University, said in an email that applications are being accepted now.

DuChene said the program was approved by the state this past fall, and was “born out of a recognition that there is a growing need for professionals in all different areas of the energy sector.”

She said the goal of the online MS program is to prepare students to be leaders in a variety of energy sectors in both industry and academics.

DuChene added that the school is targeting 20 students for the program’s first year.

According to the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering’s website, it’s a 20-month program consisting of 30 credit hours, six of which can be transferred from graduate work in the same field at a different institution.

Students applying for the program don’t have any on-site requirements, but graduate students in the online program are able to attend on campus events such as recruiting or career fairs.

In addition, students must have at least three years of professional experience in a field such as electronics, communication or software engineering, according to the program’s website.
