Grant out for Team USA in U-19 World Championship

Syracuse forward Jerami Grant has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and will miss the upcoming FIBA U19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic, according to an SU Athletics release.

Grant told The Post-Standard last week he had been diagnosed with strep throat at Team USA’s practice facility in Colorado and then contracted an additional virus. Grant was diagnosed with mononucleosis in Prague, where he will likely stay for a few more days before returning home, according to the Post-Standard.

Pittsburgh guard James Robinson will take Grant’s spot on the 12-man Team USA roster.

On the gold medal-winng U-18 national team a year ago – a team Grant was also a part of – Robinson led the team in assist-to-turnover ratio and placed second in steals.

The 2013 FIBA U-19 World Championship will be played from June 27-July 7. The U.S. opens up preliminary round play against the Ivory Coast, and then takes on China and Russia on June 28 and 29, respectively.
