Mullins out for 2013 season with right knee injury, set to have surgery

Syracuse defender Brandon Mullins will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury, according to an SU athletics release.

Mullins crumpled to the ground with about 6:45 remaining in regulation of the then-No. 16 Orange’s 9-8 overtime victory against then-No. 6 Virginia. He underwent an MRI Monday evening and received treatment during Tuesday’s practice.

He was also named to the Big East Honor Roll for his performance against UVA. The versatile defender picked up two ground balls and one turnover this season and gave head coach John Desko matchup flexibility being able to play atop and in close on defense.

The Orange is considering a number of replacement options including Matt Harris, Kyle Carey, Joe Fazio, Peter Macartney and Sean Young Desko said Tuesday. Though no SU player has the all-around quality to match his versatility, Desko said, he did point to Harris as a likely replacement in ability to play up top and down low.

Brian Megill and David Hamlin are likely to remain in their starting roles, Harris said.

No. 10 Syracuse faces St. John’s Saturday at noon in the Whitman’s Sampler Independence Classic at PPL Park in Chester, Pa.
