Syracuse guard Chance Westry will be out “indefinitely” after suffering an unknown lower-body injury in practice on Thursday, the team announced on social media Saturday afternoon. The injury will require a procedure.

Westry, a 6-foot-6 guard, transferred from Auburn to Syracuse in April, selecting the Orange over programs such as Creighton, St. John’s, Seton Hall and Penn State. In 11 contests with Auburn last year, he averaged 2.5 points.

Westry was one of several transfers that joined the program in the offseason, including fellow guards J.J. Starling (Notre Dame) and Kyle Cuffe Jr. (Kansas).

In October 2022, Westry underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. At the time, Auburn had said Westry would be out only for 3-to-4 weeks in a press release. He returned for those 11 games, last playing against Georgia on Jan. 4, before taking a medical redshirt and sitting out the rest of the season.

“It’s been great,” Westry told The Daily Orange about transitioning into the program on Oct. 15. “I just got back to practice two weeks ago, so compete and show what I got and staying ready.”

While the recovery time is unknown, it’s the first blow to the health of Syracuse’s squad, one which head coach Adrian Autry had said was “whole” and fully healthy for close to a month at his introductory press conference on Oct. 15. Autry also said that Westry had returned from injury ahead of schedule.
