Syracuse University announced the appointment of Craig Stone as its new associate vice president and chief of Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services Monday. Stone assumes his new role on April 1.

The position, which Stone is the first to assume, will report to Gwenn Judge, the interim senior vice president and chief financial officer at SU. In the role, Stone is responsible for Campus Safety and Emergency Management Services, including all administrative, operational and financial aspects of the Department of Public Safety, Emergency Management and Global Safety and Support, according to the release.

The university announced the search committee, composed of students, faculty and staff, in October 2021. In his new position, Stone will work to implement recommendations made by former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s independent review of DPS. Three of the 53 recommendations have yet to be fulfilled.

“I look forward to the kinds of transformative changes that will ensure a campus culture that is truly welcoming and offers a sense of safety and openness to diverse communities, thoughts and experiences,” Stone said in the release.

Allen Groves, the senior vice president and chief student experience officer, led the search committee. He said Stone stood out as “a genuine leader, a bridge-builder and an innovator.”

Student Association president David Bruen, a member of the committee, expressed his support for the appointment at Monday’s SA’s meeting. Bruen said Stone’s experience is “unmatched.”

“I think he is a fantastic candidate to continue the changes that students have been calling for with DPS for years now,” Bruen said at the meeting.

Stone most recently served as the deputy director of the Department of Public Safety for the city of Columbus, Ohio, and was a police officer in the city for nearly 30 years. He has also served in numerous roles at Cleveland State University, The Ohio State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

While in Columbus, Stone helped create a neighborhood violence prevention plan and worked with the Columbus City Council on legislation to improve the police hiring process, the release said. As OSU chief of police, he helped develop bike patrols and community policing academies to build trust in the community.
