University Union just announced its Fall 2019 Cinemas Schedule on Monday. Screenings take place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in HBC Gifford Auditorium. The schedule includes 13 movies which are all free of charge. 

Captain Marvel

When: Aug. 29-31

“Captain Marvel” is a film based on the Marvel comics and is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movie was released in March of this year and is the first women-led superhero film that Marvel has produced.

Late Night

When: Sept. 5-7

This drama/comedy was written by Mindy Kaling, who also plays one of the lead actors, follows a host of a late-night talk show. The movie also stars Emma Thompson, Max Casella and Hugh Dancy.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

When: Sept. 12-14

“Pokémon Detective Pikachu” is based off the Pokémon franchise and is an adaptation of the 2016 video game also called Pokémon Detective Pikachu. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu and Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, a former Pokémon Trainer and lead human role.

Rocketman

When: Sept. 19-21

Based on the life of Elton John, “Rocketman” is a musical movie starring Taron Egerton

as John and Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin. The film follows his early music career and is named after his 1972 song “Rocket Man.”

Booksmart

When: Sept. 26-28

“Booksmart” is a coming-of-age film directed by Olivia Wilde, who has been in numerous movies including 2010’s Tron: Legacy. The film follows two high school seniors who hope to have an exciting night on the evening before their graduation.

Yesterday

When: Oct. 3-5

This romantic comedy is directed by Danny Boyle who’s also directed “Slumdog Millionaire,” and “127 Hours.” The movie features a struggling artist who ends up being the only person to remember the Beatles, he takes credit for their music and becomes famous from it. 

Men in Black: International 

When: Oct. 10-12

As a spin-off from the original “Men in Black” series, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and Kumail Nanjiani. The movie is directed by F. Gary Gray who also directed “Friday,” and “Straight Outta Compton.”

The Lion King

A live CGI remake of the Disney classic, The Lion King features musical talents Donald Glover and Beyoncé as Simba and Nala respectfully. The film is directed by Marvel producer John Favreau who also directed Disney’s 2016 rendition of “The Jungle Book.” 

When: Oct. 17-19

Spider-Man: Far From Home

When: Oct. 24-26

As the 23rd movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming” the Spider-Man reboot was the fourth-highest grossing film of 2019 so far. The movie features Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Us

When: Oct. 31-Nov. 2

“Us,” is a horror film written and directed by Jordan Peele who directed 2017’s “Get Out.” The film features actor Lupita Nyong’o as she plays Adelaide Wilson, when she and her family go on vacation they are haunted by their doppelgängers.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

When: Nov. 7-9

In writer and director Quentin Tarantino’s 10th film, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie take on Hollywood in the late 1960’s. The movie follows an aging western actor along with his stunt double and their life in Hollywood.

Toy Story 4

When: Nov. 14-16

In the fourth film in the Toy Story series all of the original characters such as Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Bo Peep, including a new toy named Forky. The film stars Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Annie Potts.

It: Chapter 2

When: Dec. 5-7

“It: Chapter 2” is the sequel to 2017’s “It” which are both based on Stephen King’s 1986 Novel “It.” This horrer film is directed by Andy Muschietti who directed “Mama” and “It.”
