On Syracuse’s third drive of the game, four-year starting quarterback Eric Dungey grabbed his lower back before dropping to the ground. He flailed on the ground for a few seconds before the training staff and several coaches surrounded him.

“Don’t know right now, still waiting on the trainers.” SU head coach Dino Babers said on the status of his quarterback. “We’ve got to get him back to our place and check him out.”

Dungey walked off the field under his own power and into the locker room where he never returned from. No. 12 Syracuse eventually lost to No. 3 Notre Dame 36-3 on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. Right tackle Koda Martin said after the game the team didn’t see Dungey at halftime or the end of the game.

Prior to the injury, Dungey had completed one pass for 10 yards while rushing twice for eight yards. Redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito replaced Dungey at quarterback. After performing well in substitute of Dungey twice earlier this season in wins over Florida State and North Carolina, DeVito threw 14-of-31 for 105 yards on Saturday.

Dungey’s injury against the Irish was one of several he’s suffered over his four years as a starter at SU, and the fourth that’s forced him to leave a November game. As a freshman and sophomore, Dungey suffered season-ending concussions. Last season, a broken foot held Dungey out of the final three games.
