People attending large-scale events both on and off campus at Syracuse University will now be searched with a metal detection wand instead of security “pat-downs,” the university announced Friday afternoon.

Robert Hradsky, SU’s dean of students, said in a campus-wide email that the new security process was “less invasive.” SU changed its security practices after receiving feedback about the pat-downs and assessing its current practices, Hradsky said.

Starting Saturday, people attending events at Schine Student Center and South Campus’ SkyBarn will be searched with a metal detector. The procedure will also be adopted at large-scale off-campus events, including Juice Jam, Mayfest and Senior Celebration, per the email.

People will have to place any metal objects in their possession into bins.

Hradsky said the new practices bring SU into alignment with other large event venues and major universities.  

Friday’s announcement follows previously announced security policy changes in the Carrier Dome. People attending events at the Dome will be required to walk through metal detectors and can only bring personal items in clear bags.
