UPDATED: April 17, 2:46 a.m.

Two Syracuse University students were arrested this weekend on drug charges as a result of an ongoing investigation into the death of an SU freshman, the Syracuse Police Department said Tuesday.

There is no indication that criminal activity was involved in the death of Marianne Guppenberger, 19, of Taipei, Taiwan, police said. Guppenberger died in the early morning of April 6 after falling out of a window in Brewster Hall.

One of the students who was arrested sold marijuana to a friend of Guppenberger. The other sold illegal mushrooms to the same friend, police said.

Police are still awaiting the results of Guppenberger’s toxicology test.

Cameron Moulene, 19, a freshman in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third and seventh degrees, and unlawful possession of marijuana on Saturday, police said. Police executed a search warrant and found marijuana, a few tablets of Adderall and $5,000 in his room, police said.

Moulene was arraigned and held on $10,000 bail, police said.

Bronic Roberts, 18, a freshman in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, was arrested for criminal possession of a controlled substance in the fifth and seventh degrees, and unlawful possession of marijuana on Sunday, police said. Detectives found drug paraphernalia, marijuana, one-eighth of an ounce of mushrooms and $1,000 in his room.

Police said Roberts admitted to selling Guppenberger’s friend mushrooms.

The two students have been suspended and removed from campus, Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs, said in a statement.

“We take matters such as this seriously and have assisted the Syracuse Police Department in their investigation that led to these two drug-related arrests,” Quinn said in the statement.

When Department of Public Safety officers initially went to Roberts’ room in Brewster on Friday, Roberts was in Albany, N.Y., for a funeral. His roommate, Austin Tousaw, a freshman information management and technology major, said he returned to their split-double at about 5 p.m. to find officers searching the room thoroughly.

Officers then took Tousaw to DPS headquarters for questioning, he said.

The next day, a residence hall staff member called Tousaw and advised him not to stay in Brewster out of concern for his safety. The lock on Tousaw’s door had been changed. Given that Tousaw held the only key to the door, police feared Roberts would try to reach his roommate to enter their room.

“I wasn’t worried until they said don’t be in Brewster Hall,” Tousaw said. ‘The university definitely had me worried.”

Tousaw said he saw Roberts in the back of a DPS car when leaving Brewster on Sunday at about 3 p.m. This was the first time he had seen his roommate that weekend.

UPDATED: April 12, 2013 1:22 P.M.

A Syracuse University employee was arrested Thursday afternoon for bringing a gun to campus.

The employee, Chung Chen, 60, who is a professor of managerial statistics in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment, said Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse Police Department.

The gun, a .45 caliber handgun, was found in a leather satchel by another SU employee who was cleaning up after a lecture in Eggers Hall at about 2 p.m. on Thursday, Connellan said.

The employee contacted the SU Department of Public Safety, which then determined the owner of the gun, Connellan said.

The gun is licensed to Chen under a New York state sportsman’s permit. Although the gun is legally registered, it’s a violation of SU policy and a crime in New York state for anyone other than a law enforcement officer to bring a firearm to a college campus, Connellan said.

Chen told police he intended to go to the firing range after work, Connellan said. Police don’t believe there was any larger threat, he said.

However, a sportsman’s permit only allows the user to transport the gun from home to the shooting range in a secure case, so Chen was “far outside the scope of his permit,” Connellan said.

SPD also seized another gun from Chen’s house and confiscated his permit, Connellan said.

Chen has been suspended from the university, said Kevin Quinn, senior vice president for public affairs, in a statement.

“Although there was no threat of harm connected to this incident, as a University we take matters of this kind seriously and will continue to promote a safe and secure campus environment,” Quinn said in the statement.

Melvin Stith, dean of Whitman, sent an email to Whitman students Friday afternoon informing them of Chen’s suspension and the investigation into the incident.

“Please be assured, we take the safety and security of our university community very seriously and remain dedicated to providing such an environment to the entire campus,” Stith said in the email.

He also invited students to contact him with any questions or concerns regarding the incident or safety in general.

Former Syracuse University Athletics media director Roger Springfield Cahak entered a plea of guilty to one count of unlawful surveillance Thursday morning for surreptitiously recording male SU athletes in the locker rooms.

Springfield, 57, was indicted on four counts, and while he only pleaded guilty to the first count — a surreptitious recording from a Nov. 10, 2012, football game and a class E felony punishable by up to four years in jail — he admitted to all four counts in court.

The other three counts relate to a 2010 lacrosse game and incidents involving the men’s soccer team in spring 2010 and April 2012.

Springfield pleaded guilty before Onondaga County Court Judge Thomas Miller. Miller said he will sentence Springfield to 10 years probation with his guilty plea, contingent on Springfield staying out of further criminal trouble. The sentencing is currently scheduled for June 6.

Springfield’s registration as a sex offender has been left unresolved as of yet, but if the court proceeds to register him as a sex offender, Springfield will have the opportunity to withdraw his guilty plea.

James McGraw, Springfield’s attorney, said if the court does decide to register Springfield as a sex offender, the defense would undoubtedly withdraw the guilty plea. But McGraw said he is “quite confident” that the court will proceed with the sentence of 10 years probation without registering Springfield as a sex offender.

McGraw also said he has a submission from a psychiatrist explaining that Springfield never has and never will have interest in sexual behavior with anyone but his wife, and that the surreptitious recordings have nothing to do with sex, but rather Springfield’s past.

“There’s no question that he did this,” McGraw said, though Springfield did not plead guilty to sexual gratification.

McGraw said the submission was obtained because “they wanted evidence that he is not a threat.”

Jeremy Cali, representing the prosecution, said he believes Springfield should be registered as a sex offender, and that if the guilty plea is withdrawn he is prepared to argue his position.

“It’s clear from the content that it is a registerable offense,” Cali said.

McGraw said Springfield pleaded guilty because his reputation is ruined and “he wants to get on with his life.”

UPDATED: March 18, 5:15 p.m.

An attempted abduction of a Syracuse University female student early Sunday morning never happened, police determined after an investigation.

On Sunday night, a Department of Public Safety notice was sent out, alerting students that an unidentified male driving a Jeep approached a student as she walked alone on the 700 block of Maryland Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. earlier that day. According to the notice, the student approached the vehicle to give the man directions, the man asked her if she wanted to get in the car and then grabbed her wrist. The student was able to break free, and the man left traveling down Euclid Avenue toward campus.

But after interviewing the student, Sgt. Tom Connellan of the Syracuse Police Department said police officials found her story was “inconsistent.”

“You go into these things with an open mind but in this case, she changed her story,” he said.

An email sent out to students by DPS on Monday afternoon called the incident “unfounded” and said it “did not occur.” SPD has closed the investigation, according to the email.

DPS Chief Tony Callisto was not immediately available for comment.

Three students, including two football players, appeared in city court Monday regarding February burglary charges.

Defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster and defensive tackle Davon Walls appeared in front of Judge Jeffrey Merrill shortly after 10 a.m. in Syracuse City Court. Pierce-Brewster’s case was waived to an Onondaga County Grand Jury while Walls was given a city court date of Sept. 12, according to the Onondaga County Clerk’s Office. Both players posted bail after they were arrested on charges of burglarizing about $950 in electronics from a South Campus apartment on Feb. 23.

The pair was accused of stealing a flat-screen television, an Xbox gaming system, two iPods and Xbox games from an apartment on the 400 block of Winding Ridge Road.

During the alleged burglary, Pierce-Brewster stood watch outside the apartment while Walls entered through an unlocked back door, according to court documents.

Pierce-Brewster, sporting an orange and blue striped tie and blazer, appeared first and spoke only when prompted by Merrill, answering questions about his permanent address and phone number.

A media request from a local television news station to film Walls’ hearing was turned down by the defensive end. “I care, I don’t want it,” said Walls, dressed in a red polo and khakis, before providing his personal information to Merrill.

A hearing for L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science sophomore Erwing Augustin also took place Monday. Augustin and Bradley Valik, also an L.C. Smith sophomore, were arrested on Feb. 23 after they stole $750 worth of electronics from two South Campus apartments to replace the items Pierce-Brewster and Walls are accused of stealing from them, reported The Post-Standard on Thursday.

Valik appeared in court on Friday and hasn’t made bail, according to the County Clerk’s Office. Augustin and Valik will appear in city court again on Sept. 12.

“Stay out of trouble,” Merill advised as Augustin retreated from the bench.

UPDATED: March 6, 6:50 p.m.

Four Syracuse University students, including two Syracuse football players, were arrested on charges of burglarizing South Campus apartments on Feb. 23, according to Syracuse police.

All four students were arraigned in Syracuse City Court on Wednesday.

Defensive end Markus Pierce-Brewster and defensive tackle Davon Walls are both charged with second-degree burglary and petit larceny after burglarizing an apartment on the 400 block of Winding Ridge Road while the residents were sleeping, according to court documents. They’re accused of stealing a flat-screen television, an Xbox gaming system, two iPods and Xbox games, worth a total of approximately $950.

“We are very disappointed and do not in any way condone the alleged behavior that resulted in these charges,” Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said in a statement. “This does not represent the core values of our program or the conduct expected of student-athletes representing Syracuse football. We will be following the judicial process and will act accordingly.”

During the burglary, Pierce-Brewster stayed outside of the apartment and acted as a “lookout” while Walls entered the apartment through the unlocked back door at about 1:15 a.m., according to court documents.

The SU Department of Public Safety’s video surveillance cameras captured video of Pierce-Brewster and Walls in possession of the stolen property, according to court documents. Additionally, DPS Commander Vernon Thompson identified Walls as one of the suspects in the incident, according to court documents.

The footage also shows Pierce-Brewster driving his car up to his own apartment and, together with Walls, taking the stolen property out of the car and carrying it into the apartment, according to court documents.

Pierce-Brewster, a junior, is a JUCO transfer from the City College of San Francisco. He played in 13 games for Syracuse last season, racking up 30 total tackles, 11 of them solo, and one sack. He’s one of only two returning starters on Syracuse’s defensive line.

Walls, a junior, is a JUCO transfer from Coahoma Community College in Mississippi. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native played in only three games for the Orange last season.

In two separate incidents, two SU students, Erwing Augustin and Bradley Valik, both sophomores in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science, were also arrested on charges of burglary on the 400 block of Winding Ridge Road and the 200 block of Winding Ridge Road, which took place Feb. 23.

Both are charged with two counts of second-degree burglary and two counts of petit larceny, according to court documents.

Augustin and Valik are accused of stealing a flat-screen television, a Playstation gaming system, six Playstation video games and an amplifier from an apartment on the 200 block of Winding Ridge Road. The total value of the property was more than $1,000, according to court documents.

DPS security cameras captured footage of Augustin and Valik carrying the stolen property into their apartment, according to court documents.

The two are also accused of stealing a flat-screen television, a set of Xbox controllers and an Xbox gaming system from an apartment on the 400 block of Winding Ridge Road at about 1:30 a.m. The total value of the stolen property is estimated at about $750, according to court documents.

After a recent string of burglaries in the East neighborhood and South Campus, the Department of Public Safety is urging students to remember to lock their doors and windows.

“If you can secure your unattended property and lock your doors — that’s what we’re asking you to do,” said Vernon Thompson, commander of DPS’ Investigations and Crime Prevention Unit. “That could go a long way in deterring a lot of things that go on.”

DPS has posted two alerts about the burglaries. The first was sent out last Wednesday to people living off campus about burglaries and larcenies on the 500 and 600 blocks of Euclid Avenue. The other was sent out Monday to students living on South Campus about burglaries in the Winding Ridge Road area.

Thompson said there were two crimes reported in each area, but there’s no indication they’re connected. The common theme in all four, he said, is that they’re unforced or property is left out in the open.

This includes expensive items such as MacBooks and GPS units being left in sight in the front or back seats of cars, Thompson said.

Often, these crimes are committed by other students, he said. Thompson described them as “crimes of opportunity.”

As a response, DPS is increasing its patrols through the University Area Crime-Control Team and Orange Watch. This increase usually continues until the burglars are caught, he said, or officers are needed in a different area.

Syracuse University has taken preventative steps with housing, such as installing improved locks to prevent burglaries, he said. But students should still be proactive.

“We’ve made the apartments very secure,” Thompson said. “But they’re not secure if you don’t lock them — if you leave them unlocked.”
