Syracuse sets multiple program records in 13-1 win over Lindenwood

Throughout its nonconference schedule, Syracuse’s inability to string together goals resulted in losses piling up against some of the highest-ranked teams in the country. But over the last 48 hours, the Orange found a way to pepper Lindenwood, a program winless in conference play, with shots.
Syracuse (5-12-1, 4-1-1 College Hockey America) toppled Lindenwood (2-12-3, 0-6-0 CHA) 13-1 in the second of two matchups between the two teams. The Orange outscored the Lions 20-1 across the span of their series — including a 7-0 win on Friday night — and in their last game of the decade, it was a record setting game.
The game marked the most goals scored by Syracuse in a single game (13) in program history – the previous record was 10 against Sacred Heart in 2008 – and also the largest margin of victory of a single game. The previous record was also 10, this time against St. Anselem in 2008.
With 11 different members of the team making their mark on the scoresheet, Syracuse’s win set the record for most individual goal scorers in a single game for the Orange. Both Lauren Bellefontaine and Anna Leschyshyn scored twice.
After ending the first period with a 2-0 lead, the Orange exploded for seven goals in the second. Two power play goals and a short-handed tally quickly expanded the SU lead to 5-0 in the period’s opening half, and Victoria Klimek, Leschyshyn, Shelby Calof, Brynn Koocher rounded out the scoring for the middle 20 minutes.
Due to injuries, Lindenwood resorted to skaters playing goalie for the weekend. In Friday’s 7-0 loss, the Lions played senior forward Cierra Paisley. On Saturday, it was freshman Madilynn Hickey’s turn to strap on the pads and face the onslaught that Syracuse brought.
Ady Cohen split the weekend in goal with Allison Small and turned away 13 shots in Saturday’s win, which brought Syracuse head coach Paul Flanagan just two wins away from 400 as a coach.
The Orange’s next matchup is a nonconference game against St. Lawrence on Jan. 7.
