Beth Ann Newkirk transferred to SUNY-ESF last fall to study environmental and forest biology.

Beth Ann Newkirk, a SUNY-ESF student, died on Tuesday from injuries suffered during a Monday house fire in Syracuse, the college’s interim president announced Tuesday night.

Newkirk, an environmental and forest biology major, was unresponsive when firefighters pulled her from a burning house on Buckingham Avenue on Monday morning, said interim president David Amberg in an email to the SUNY-ESF campus community. Newkirk was working in Syracuse over the summer as a work-study collections intern at the SUNY-ESF’s Roosevelt Wild Life Collections.

Originally from Troy, New York, Newkirk transferred to SUNY-ESF from Hudson Valley Community College last fall. She worked with the New York Natural Heritage Program as a field technician and assisted with a statewide pollinator project.

The Syracuse Police Department and Syracuse Fire Department are currently investigating the fire.
