Iliass Aouani finished less than two minutes behind the fastest collegiate runner in the nation.

Iliass Aouani was crowned the top male runner in the northeast region this past Friday, but he needed to shave roughly two minutes off his time to be the best in the country.

The senior finished 20th in the NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas. By virtue of his place, Aouani received an All-American honorable mention. For the first time this decade, no men’s outdoor runner from Syracuse made first- or second-team All-American.

BYU’s Clayton Young won the event with a time of 29:16.60, one of three Cougars who finished in the top five.

SU senior Paige Stoner and sophomore Laura Dickinson will have their chance at All-American status in the women’s event tomorrow night. Stoner was recognized as the top female runner in the northeast in last week’s regional awards.

She also made first-team All-American last year in the steeplechase. Dickinson is making her first ever NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships appearance after a breakout sophomore season.
