Syracuse lost to Northwestern in the NCAA tournament quarterfinals.

Emily Hawryschuk and Sarah Cooper were both named to the Media All-American second team by Inside Lacrosse on Tuesday. Hawryschuk led Syracuse with 75 goals in 2019 and Cooper is of two freshmen chosen in Inside Lacrosse’s Media All-American selections.

In her junior season, Hawryschuk took over control of the Orange’s scoring attack, registering a hat trick in 18 of SU’s 21 games. She scored an overtime game-winner against then-No. 4 Northwestern in the Carrier Dome on Feb. 24, and finished the season with the second-most goals in program history.

Hawryschuk led the way with seven points in Syracuse’s first NCAA tournament win since 2016, and had another five-goal performance in the Orange’s loss to the Wildcats in the NCAA quarterfinals.

It shows that she refuses to be denied,” head coach Gary Gait said after SU’s season-ending loss. “She’s one of the few players in the country that hasn’t been shut out before.”

Cooper came into Syracuse as the No. 1-ranked defender in the Class of 2018, and followed it up with a team-high 33 caused turnovers. The freshman was the Orange’s “backer” and occasionally took draws throughout the season.

The freshman’s lone score of the season came off a caused turnover against Coastal Carolina. Hawryschuk and Cooper passed the ball to each other twice until Cooper scored on the run, netting her first and only collegiate goal. In her first season, she was named ACC freshman of the year and was ACC defender of the week during the first week of March.

“I’m really excited for everyone that’s not on the field or on our team to see how good our defense is,” goalkeeper Asa Goldstock said during the 2019 season, “because we have Sarah Cooper on defense, who’s been just absolutely amazing.”
