Syracuse University will renovate several of its dorms and a dining hall as part of its summer 2018 construction projects, according to a campus-wide email sent on Tuesday.

In the email, Pete Sala, the university’s vice president and chief facilities officer, said Day Hall’s bathrooms will be converted from communal bathrooms to single-user accessible restrooms. Rooms in Day and Lyons Halls will receive new finishes and furniture.

The Brockway Dining Hall will be fully renovated with a new server layout that will include additional food options. The dining hall will also get new furniture. An accessible ramp to the dining hall will be constructed on the Brewster Brockway Boland Plaza, along with new pavement and outdoor furniture.

Renovations to the Archbold Gymnasium will continue throughout the summer, including excavation for the foundation of a larger pool and utility work. The $50 million renovation project, which is part of Chancellor Kent Syverud’s Campus Framework infrastructure plan, will convert the gym into a 7,000-square foot fitness and wellness center with a six-lane lap pool. The demolition of the southern end of Archbold is complete.

The portion of Sims Drive between Flanagan Gymnasium and Archbold will remain closed until late August because of utility construction related to the Archbold renovations.

Concrete trucks have begun to pour the slab foundation for the National Veterans Resource Complex, a $62.5 million project at the intersection of South Crouse and Waverly Avenues. The NVRC’s purpose is to centralize campus veterans programs. Excavation and fine grading of the site is nearing completion, and the building is set to open in spring 2020.

Additional summer projects include a new roof for Hendricks Chapel and asphalt resurfacing for all six of SU’s parking garages and several parking lots. Both of those projects are expected to be completed during the summer.

Utility upgrades will also be installed in the Q-1 parking lot, and crews are working on additional utility work along University Place between the entrance of the Hillside lot and Crouse Drive. The university will upgrade underground steam utilities, which includes pedestrian improvements to the Hillside lot. Steam and condensate lines and steam vaults will be replaced on Forestry Drive, near Sadler Circle and the Carrier Dome loading dock.

In the fall, construction will begin on an additional accessible bathroom in the Physics Building basement.

CLARIFICATION: In a previous version of this post, the construction timeline was unclear. There is not an official time when construction will finish.
