Salih and Rosenblum are both involved in various organizations on campus, and said they have a diverse team working on their campaign.

Ghufran Salih and Kyle Rosenblum, two Syracuse University sophomores, on Thursday afternoon announced their campaign for Student Association president and vice president.

The pair is the third to announce their candidacy this week. John Jankovic and Serena Fazal declared their bid for SA leadership on Wednesday afternoon, and Kaitlyn Ellsweig and Ryan Houck publicly announced their campaign on Monday.

Salih said their platforms are based around students. She added that they are focusing on five themes for the campaign: diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, transparency in the administration, community engagement and an “unwritten” fifth theme. Students would decide the fifth theme, Salih said.

“This campaign that we’re running is all about the students,” Salih said. “We want to hear what the students have to say.”

Rosenblum is currently co-chair of the health and wellness subcommittee of SA’s student life committee. Salih has never been formally involved in the organization and said she used to be intimidated by SA.

Salih said they both have been involved on campus since their freshmen year and have both seen different sides of SU. She said they have seen the campus thrive and they’ve seen potential.

“As sophomores, we’re not really the most conventional candidates, so it made us think, ‘Why not now?’” Salih said. “There are so many students on campus that have so many different ideas and want to do so much, and we want them to always ask themselves, ‘Why not now?’”

The pair said they would like to review the statistics of sexual assault on campus and create a report with detailed steps on how to address and handle the topic, if elected.

They also want students more engaged on campus with community service and outreach, Salih said.

Rosenblum said they had a diverse team helping with their campaign, including members of Greek life, various student organizations and the SUNY-ESF community.

The two emphasized that they thought what current SA president and vice president James Franco and Angie Pati have done with mental health and wellness has been a great groundwork for more initiatives on the issue, in the future.
