Nick Mariano, Scott Firman earn ACC Player of the Week honors

Nick Mariano and Scott Firman have been named ACC Players of the Week after Syracuse’s one-goal win over top-ranked Notre Dame.

In its program-record seventh straight one-goal game, No. 2 Syracuse (7-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast) avenged last year’s 17-7 drubbing against UND. Mariano finished with a season-high four goals while Firman limited Notre Dame’s best attack, sophomore Ryder Garnsey, to just one goal. It’s Mariano’s second straight ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor.

Mariano leads the team in both goals (19) and points (30). The senior attack had Syracuse’s lone two goals in the fourth quarter, the deciding factor in the upset win.

Firman has held his own against the nation’s best. He limited Garnsey, the quarterback of Notre Dame’s offense, to just one goal. Firman added two ground balls and a caused turnover in the win. SU’s No. 1 defender leads the team with nine caused turnovers.

Syracuse remains on the road this Wednesday as the Orange suits up for unranked Hobart at 7 p.m.
