Syracuse recaptured the top spot in the national field hockey rankings on Tuesday. SU is coming off a national title in 2015.

Syracuse has recaptured the No. 1 ranking in the NFHCA Coaches Poll, a spot it had when SU won the national title last November.

The Orange has started the season 4-0 with wins against then-No.4 Maryland and an overtime victory over then-No. 13. Liberty.

Meanwhile, North Carolina, the previous No. 1 team, is 3-1, losing the season opener 1-0 to Michigan.

Syracuse received 25 first-place votes and finished with 788 points. Following SU is Duke (712 points, one first-place vote) and North Carolina (707 points, seven first-place votes). Penn State received the other eight votes, coming in at No. 5 in this week’s rankings.

The Orange doesn’t have an easy path to stay atop the rankings, as SU will face both Duke and North Carolina, as well as six other ranked teams.

The Orange will play its home opener Friday, Sept. 9 against No. 18 Boston College. Syracuse will face No. 14 Stanford two days later.
