Syracuse University consolidates Enrollment Management and Student Affairs

A report from the consulting firm Bain Capital found that the university could be more efficient and save money by consolidating departments.

Two administrative offices at Syracuse University are being merged into one after it was found that the two departments share some overlapping responsibilities, the university announced Thursday.

The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management will be combined into the new Division of Enrollment and Student Experience, according to an SU News release.

“By combining these two areas, we seek to ensure that there is a seamless, high-quality experience for our students from the first introduction to Syracuse University through Commencement,” Chancellor Kent Syverud said in the release.

Syverud also created a search committee to find the leader of the new department. The members of the search committee are as follows:

  • Michele Wheatly, vice chancellor and provost (chair)
  • Colleen Bench, associate vice president for student affairs
  • Eric Evangelista ‘17, Student Association president
  • Maurice Harris, dean of admissions
  • Judith C. Mower, University Trustee and Chair of Student Affairs Committee
  • Amanda Nicholson, associate dean of undergraduate programs, Martin J. Whitman School of Management

The announcement comes after Michele Wheatly was appointed the university’s new vice chancellor and provost and a report from the consulting firm Bain & Co. concluded that SU suffers from administrative bloat. The report suggested that the university could save money and become more efficient by consolidating.



“In sharing this new direction with the leadership of the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs units, I was very pleased with the enthusiasm they expressed over the opportunity this merger presents for providing for greater synergies and partnerships to serve our students,” Wheatly said in the release.
