What to watch for this weekend

Numerous lectures this weekend are part of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

Here are some events worth checking out this weekend:

Conversations in Conflict Studies lecture

Rebecca Peters, an assistant professor of public administration and international affairs at Syracuse University, will discuss the difficulties of international development partnerships for the final Conversations in Conflict lecture of the semester.

Peters will be specifically examining the Good Governance in Angola Program (GGAP), a program in which three international non-governmental organizations partnered with the Angola government during the “post-war” period. The various partners formed different ideas for the direction of the program, which caused divisions, according to the event’s web page.

The lecture will take place on Thursday in Eggers Hall at 12:30 p.m.



 

Harvard professor gives Jerry Miner lecture

Richard Murnane, an economist and professor at Harvard University, will deliver the 2016 installation of the Jerry Miner Lecture Series on Thursday. Miner is a professor emeritus at Syracuse University.

Murnane’s lecture is titled “The Consequences of Educational Reform in Chile: Lessons for the U.S. School Choice Debate,” according to the event’s web page. Murnane’s research focuses on how changes in the educational system in Chile have influenced distribution of students and student achievement, according to his Harvard profile.

The lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Eggers Hall on Thursday.

 

18th Annual ASIA Night

The final event of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month will be the 18th Annual ASIA Night in Grant Auditorium. The event is Asian Students in America (ASIA)’s annual end-of-the-year celebration.

YouTube star and singer-songwriter Kina Grannis is the main performance of the night, but student acts will also perform, according to the event poster.

ASIA Night will run from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m on Saturday. Tickets are available at Schine Box Office for $5.

 

Lecture on commuting and local employment

The Trade, Development and Political Economy Group will present a lecture on the causes and effects of commuting. Ferdinando Monte, an assistant professor of strategy and economics at Georgetown, will deliver the lecture, according to the event’s web page.

The lecture is titled “Commuting, Migration and Local Employment Elasticities,” which is also the title of one of Monte’s papers.

Monte’s lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in Eggers Hall on Thursday.
