Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner wrote a letter advising Syracuse University students to be mindful of their safety and considerate of residents living around Walnut Park during Mayfest on Friday.

In the letter, Miner said her administration has been coordinating with SU to organize Mayfest and with the Syracuse Police Department to shut down the surrounding streets.

“As a Syracuse University alumna, I value the time and effort that students have put into planning this event; however, it is important the safety of students and their neighbors remains,” Miner said in the letter.

Miner has ordered SPD to “strictly” enforce the city ordinances, such as the banning of open containers, excessive noise and littering, among other city rules, according to the letter.

Miner also urged Mayfest attendees to treat residents living around the university area with respect and consideration and warned those who violate the city ordinances that they will be held responsible.

Because of Mayfest, parking on Walnut Avenue and Walnut Place will be restricted on Thursday and no parking will be allowed on Friday, according to a SU Parking and Transit Services release.

Parking at University Avenue Garage will also be limited, according to the release. Parking and Transit Services will offer limited parking at the Harrison Parking Lot on Harrison Street, which is located between University Avenue and South Crouse Avenue, according to the release.

Also in the release, Parking and Transit Services urged people to follow the “no parking” signs and not to park in between barrels.
