Michele Wheatly, who previously served as provost of West Virginia University, will start her role as vice chancellor and provost of Syracuse University on May 16.

Michele Wheatly has been named the next vice chancellor and provost at Syracuse University, the university announced Friday.

Wheatly comes to SU from West Virginia University, where she serves as special assistant to WVU President Gordon Gee. She previously served as WVU’s provost from January 2010 through June 2014. As provost at SU, Wheatly will serve as the chief academic officer of the university and oversee the academic side of SU.

The British-educated administrator will also lead the implementation of the Academic Strategic Plan, one of the three components of Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud’s Fast Forward initiative.

“Michele Wheatly has demonstrated the kind of leadership that embraces change, empowers research excellence and enhances the student experience,” Syverud said in an SU News release.

In an interview with The Daily Orange, Wheatly said the Academic Strategic Plan was “well-crafted” with the right amount of input from the community.

Wheatly, who was approved by the Board of Trustees on Friday, will replace Liz Liddy, who served as the interim vice chancellor and provost after Eric Spina announced that he was stepping down from the position in December 2014.

Wheatly will start on May 16 and told The D.O. that she will be meeting with SU leaders in the coming months to gather input on the current state of the university.
