Special events sergeant and the commander in charge of managing security for the event told Hannah Warren, public information officer for the Department of Public Safety, that specific security measures taken for the vice president’s visit could not be discussed with the public or the media.

The Syracuse University community can expect sporadic and temporary traffic delays on North Campus area streets during Vice President Joe Biden’s visit on Thursday.

Waverly Avenue between South Crouse and Walnut avenues is scheduled to be closed between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to accommodate Biden’s arrival to and departure from Syracuse, said Hannah Warren, public information officer for the Department of Public Safety, in an email.

The southbound lane of the 800 block of University Ave. — near the Sheraton Hotel — between Waverly Avenue and Marshall Street will also be closed during this time, Warren said.

She added that during this time, hotel guests will be able to leave the parking garage on University Avenue traveling north.

Biden will be visiting SU on Thursday as part of a four-stop college tour to raise awareness about the White House’s “It’s On Us” campaign to prevent sexual assault on college campuses.

Keith Kobland, media manager for SU, said in an email that the event will not have a major impact on any of the SU campus lots. There won’t be any changes in cost for parking for the event, he added.

The doors to Goldstein Auditorium inside the Schine Student Center will open at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday for those who have tickets. Tickets for the event, which were free of charge, sold out around 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The event is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m.

Kobland said Schine will remain open throughout the day on Thursday.

Warren said everyone entering Schine should expect a security screening from the time the building opens at 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Special events sergeant and the commander in charge of managing security for the event told Warren that specific security measures taken for the vice president’s visit could not be discussed with the public or the media.

The vice president will also discuss the public awareness campaign next week at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; Clemson University in South Carolina; and Morehouse College in Atlanta, the White House said Friday.
