Syracuse squeaks by New Hampshire for 1st win of season

Syracuse (1-2) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over New Hampshire (0-3) at the Whittemore Center in Durham, New Hampshire.

Syracuse struck first just over four minutes into the first period on an unassisted goal by Emily Costales. It was her first goal of the season.

SU then pushed the lead to 2-0 on a power-play goal from Heather Schwarz midway through the second period with the assist from Nicole Ferrara. But New Hampshire answered seven minutes later with a goal from Amy Schlagel to cut the deficit to one.

Just over nine minutes into the third period, Ferrara scored on an unassisted goal to give the Orange a cushion. It was her second goal of the season.

A New Hampshire power-play goal by Amy Boucher just over three minutes later brought the lead to 3-2, but SU held on.

Syracuse goalkeeper Jenn Gilligan finished with 15 saves on the afternoon.

SU has averaged 3.5 goals in its last two games after scoring just once in its home opener against Clarkson on Oct. 6.

The Orange will return to action Saturday, Oct. 17, at Connecticut at 2 p.m.
