Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer told Cuse TV that Eric Dungey is doubtful for SU's game against LSU on Saturday.

Eric Dungey will “probably be doubtful” to play on Saturday against Louisiana State, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer said in an interview with Cuse TV on Monday.

The true freshman quarterback took a hit to the head in the second quarter of SU’s 30-27 overtime win on Saturday. Shafer said Dungey wanted to keep playing, but trainers said the team needed to be safe and take him out of the game. Now, it appears he will miss at least the Orange’s game against No. 8 LSU.

“He’s doing good. I saw him today, he’s up and about. He’s being himself,” Shafer told Cuse TV. “… Probably doubtful for Eric, obviously.”

Dungey had replaced the injured quarterback Terrel Hunt admirably. On Saturday, he had the best game of his short career, throwing for a touchdown and running for one more. In his absence, backup quarterback Austin Wilson struggled, and Zack Mahoney — a walk-on who was the fifth-string QB just two weeks prior — showed promise in limited time.

Shafer didn’t commit to a potential starter should Dungey be unavailable. He said they’ll look at Wilson, Mahoney and even AJ Long, who Shafer said isn’t throwing “the way he’s capable of” since recovering from a hand injury this summer.

“We’re going to take all three of those guys and try to figure out where they’re at, see where Eric’s at,” Shafer said. “… We’ve just got to make the best decision for the team.”
