5 things to know about BØRNS
Up-and-coming artist BØRNS is set to hit the Juice Jam stage Sept. 13. The 23-year-old singer released his first EP, “Candy,” in late 2014. Here are five facts that you should know, before you see him perform at UU’s fall music festival.
1. Despite the name, he’s not from Europe
Don’t let the fancy ø in his name fool you, the popstar wasn’t raised in Denmark or the Netherlands. The long-haired singer was brought up in the heart of the Midwest in rural Michigan. His real name is Garrett Borns, without the stylized ø. But hey, adding that slash is really artsy.
2. Taylor Swift is a big fan
That’s right, the pop superstar loves BØRNS’ upbeat-funk sound. Swift posted a picture on Instagram on January 19 of his song “Electric Love,” playing on what appears to be her iPhone or iPod with the caption, “So ‘Electric Love’ by Børns sounds like an instant classic to me…..#justsayingggg @garrettborns.” Not a bad person to get some praise from.
3. He’s performed with a previous Juice Jam act
Last year, indie pop New York natives MisterWives took the side stage early as the first performer at Juice Jam 2014. This spring, BØRNS joined them on their ‘Our Own House’ tour between February and April of this year.
4. BØRNS lives in a treehouse
In an interview with interview.com, the artist talked about his time living off the grid in a treehouse: “Yeah, I found it on Airbnb. In the pictures it looked like a beautiful treetop palace. I’m living off the grid up there. There’s no plumbing; I have an outdoor kitchen. I’m living very simply.”
5. One Republic made a bold prediction about him
The band took to Twitter in January predicting that BØRNS’ song “Electric Love” is going to be “big.”
