SU appoints ADA coordinator, begins national search for equal opportunity officer

Syracuse University has appointed a new Americans with Disabilities Act coordinator and is conducting a national search for a Chief Equal Opportunity Officer, the university announced Thursday.

Aaron Hodukavich has been appointed SU’s new ADA coordinator — a position many members of the SU community have called to be filled. THE General Body, a coalition of student organizations, had called for a new ADA coordinator in its list of grievances and demands as part of an 18-day sit-in in November 2014.

THE General Body did not immediately return an email requesting comment.

Hodukavich comes to SU from Clark College in Vancouver, Washington where he has served as ADA coordinator and has more than seven years of experience advocating for equal opportunity, access and inclusion for individuals with disabilities in employment and education, according to an SU News release.

“…I am excited that Aaron has chosen to join the University and provide significant expertise in the area of disability support to our community,” said Chief Human Resources Officer Andy Gordon, who announced the move.

The university is also conducting a search for a Chief Equal Opportunity Officer, who will oversee the Office of Equal Opportunity and Inclusion Resolution Services, according to the release. The officer will also handle Title IX for the university and will report directly to Gordon.

Sheila Johnson-Willis—the current director of equal opportunity and inclusion—has been appointed interim Chief Equal Opportunity Officer and Title IX Officer, while SU conducts the national search.

“I am so pleased that Sheila has agreed to step into this interim role because her expertise and knowledge of the University will be instrumental as we bring additional resources into this area,” said Gordon.
