Letters to the Editor

SU NAACP chapter president replies to comments left under previous Letter to the Editor

I do not “live” nor am I “angry, bitter and mean” ShadrachSmith. I am however, disgusted! The comments that you and your peers left under my previous letter to the editor are atrocious and the ultimate example of the racism and ignorance seen on this campus.

YOU, “Edward Bright,” are anything but bright. You are the epitome of the exact same ignorant messages I was referring to in the article. How ironic! Do you realize that the racist terms, “monkey,” “apes” and the other bigoted, trite statements that were written are essentially the problem? You and people like you are why we rally. You and people like you are why we the NAACP have been around for 109 years and you and people like you are why we will continue to be around until the crime against humanity you have just committed towards my organization, my people and myself, cease.

People that are not “bright,” like you, ignore our claims of racism and violation and refuse to acknowledge their truth. You intentionally dismiss them, henceforth we will continue to shed light on these injustices, lies and force you to listen. Are we supposed to just accept the injustices for another say…400 years? No! Why should we? We are more educated, prideful and accomplished as we have ever been, due to our own will for survival. So why should we believe your racist comments or remain silent to your perjury against people of color? We should not and we will not!

Thus, I thank you all for your hate filled comments because you have proven to my unit that our work has just begun and will not end until people with similar views as you are no longer ill-formed, unconscious and racially prejudice on this campus and nationally.

Sincerely,
Olivia Johnson
President of the Syracuse University unit of the NAACP

PS: I truly believe that I am sitting in classes with progressive, intellectual and conscious students that believe in the purpose and mission of our beloved institution and that of higher learning and know that racism is wrong. If you believe anything otherwise then YOU are not what our alma mater stands for and YOU do not bleed orange nor red, white and blue or maybe you do.
