Syracuse police arrest 2 SU Nu Alpha Phi fraternity members for hazing incident

Two Syracuse University fraternity members have been arrested for involvement in a hazing incident, which may cause a pledge to lose four fingers, according to Syracuse police.

The victim, who is a 20-year-old SU student, said the pledging members of Nu Alpha Phi were told to perform push ups, sit ups and roll in the snow at a park for approximately 20 minutes, according to police. Pledges were dressed in sweatshirts, pants, boots and no gloves. After finishing the exercises, the pledges were given hand warmers and told to walk back to the fraternity at 739 Ackerman Ave.

The victim said when he returned home he felt extreme pain in his hands even after running them under warm water. The next day, still in pain, he went to Crouse Hospital where he was told that had severe frostbite to his fingers and may lose his ring and pinkie fingers on both hands, according to police.

Tae Kim, 19 and Jeffrey Yam, 21 have been charged with hazing in the first degree, a Class A Misdemeanor, police said.

The incident occurred at about midnight on Sunday, when three pledging members of the fraternity were told to perform the exercises in Lower Hookway Park on Colvin Street as punishment for “failing to perform their daily duties properly,” police said.

The victim reported the incident to the Department of Public Safety who then turned over the investigation to the Syracuse Police Department. On Tuesday, police said a search warrant was conducted at the fraternity’s residence and the two suspects were arrested.

Both suspects were released on appearance tickets and will appear in court. The two other pledging members refused to cooperate with the investigation, according to police.
