Syracuse splits two games on final day of Mary Nutter Classic

Syracuse (7-8) split two games Sunday to close out its weekend in Cathedral City, California at the Mary Nutter Classic. The Orange lost the first game to Texas A&M (12-4), 9-1, and shutout Nevada (3-10), 6-0, in the second game.

Sydney O’Hara got the loss in the first contest, allowing five hits and six runs, four earned, in two innings of work. She also had two strikeouts and two walks.

Lindsey Larkin pitched the remainder of the game and allowed three earned runs on six hits and a strikeout.

The Orange’s sole run in the first game came when Corinne Ozanne hit her eighth home run of the season in the top of the first.

Jocelyn Cater and O’Hara pitched in the second game, combining for the shutout. Cater recorded the win, improving to 4-5 on the season after allowing four hits in five innings of work. O’Hara allowed one hit in the last two frames, preserving the win.



Syracuse scored two runs in the first inning to begin the scoring when Julie Wambold singled to right field, scoring leadoff hitter Maddi Doane. O’Hara singled to right field as well, scoring Ozanne and bringing the score to 2-0 Syracuse in the top of the first.

Syracuse also scored two runs in the fifth inning when O’Hara doubled to left center and Sammy Fernandez came across to score. Ozanne scored on McKenna Isenberg’s wild pitch.

In the sixth inning, Nevada walked in a run with the bases loaded, bringing SU’s lead to 5-0. Doane singled to center field in the seventh inning and Annie Toczynski scored, rounding out the scoring for the Orange.

Syracuse opens up conference play on Saturday when it travels to North Carolina State for a three-game series in Raleigh, North Carolina.
