Syracuse falls to Miami after defeating Illinois-Chicago, starts year 1-1

Syracuse (1-1) defeated Illinois-Chicago (1-1) 10-1 before dropping the second game to Miami (Ohio) (1-1), 6-4, in Rosemont, Illinois on Friday in its first day of action this season.

In the first game, Syracuse broke the game way open with a seven-run second inning that followed a one-run effort in the first.

Freshman outfielder Maddi Doane had two RBIs in the second frame. Alyssa Dewes, Riley Johnson, Mary Dombrowski, Danielle Chitkowski and Sammy Fernandez all had an RBI. Going into the third, Syracuse’s eight-run lead was too much for UIC to overcome.

Doane led the way offensively for SU with three hits, three runs, two RBIs and a walk. Julie Wambold went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs as Dewes and Dombrowski each scored two runs in the win.

Sophomore Sydney O’Hara pitched a complete game, allowing one runs on five hits. O’Hara had 15 complete games last season and already has one in as many starts to start the year.

In game two, Miami scored two runs in the first, one in the fourth and three runs in the sixth inning. SU junior Lindsey Larkin came pitched an inning in relief, allowing one hit and stranding the runner on base.

The Orange started a rally in the bottom of the sixth inning after Corinne Ozanne homered. Then Johnson reached on an error by a Miami infielder, pushing Dewes across to score.

Syracuse held Miami scoreless in the top of the seventh to keep the score within striking distance. Doane stayed hot, doubling and scored Fernandez, who singled to lead off the inning.

Wambold singled and Doane scored off an error by the third baseman, but Chitkowski grounded out to end the game.

SU continues its action in the Total Sports Control Invitational with two games on Saturday. The first game will be at 12:30 p.m. against Samford (1-0) and the second will be played at 5:30 p.m. against Central Michigan (0-1).
