Syracuse shuts out Lindenwood on road, pulls to within 1 point of Mercyhurst in CHA standings

With second place in the conference on the line, Syracuse (4-6-7, 3-1-3 College Hockey America) shut out Lindenwood (4-8-1, 3-3-1), 1-0, in front of a Lions crowd of 86 on Friday. The Orange earned its first road win of the season and kept its opponent scoreless for the first time all year.

Just three minutes in, forward Jessica Sibley scored her sixth goal of the season for the Orange. Defenseman Akane Hosoyamada and forward Alysha Burriss assisted on the play.

Sibley led the team with five shots and took 24 of SU’s 43 faceoffs.

In the second period, Lindenwood had three power play opportunities, but SU killed off each one. Its penalty kill was 4-for-4 on the game, but its power play was 0-for-4.

Backed by seven stops from goalie Jenn Gilligan, the Orange defense kept Lindenwood off the board again in the third period. Gilligan saved all 19 shots she faced on the night to complete the shutout.

SU entered the game tied for second place in the CHA with Lindenwood, but now has sole possession of the spot and is only one point behind conference-leader Mercyhurst.

Syracuse and Lindenwood will face off again on Saturday at 3 p.m. in St. Charles, Missouri.
