Syracuse ranks No. 23 in preseason AP poll

Syracuse was ranked No. 23 in the country in Associated Press’ preseason men’s basketball poll, which was released Friday morning.

Jim Boeheim’s team is one of five Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the Top 25 and four — No. 4 Duke, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 8 Louisville and No. 9 Virginia — are in the Top 10. The poll gave SU, which received 178 points, its lowest preseason rank since before the 2009-10 season, when SU wasn’t voted into the Top 25.

That team went 30-5, earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and lost to Butler in the Sweet 16.

Syracuse opens its exhibition season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Carleton (Canada) in the Carrier Dome.
