Morgan to be checked out for knee injury, Shafer says

Junior cornerback Wayne Morgan has a “bit of a knee problem” and will see doctors Thursday, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer announced at his weekly press conference Thursday morning.

“We don’t know how severe it is. We think it’s probably something they can possibly clean up and get him back,” Shafer said. “Not going to know until they go in there. So we’ll see how Wayne gets through that.”

Syracuse (2-1) travels to face No. 8 Notre Dame (3-0) at MetLife Stadium at 8 p.m. on Saturday and Shafer didn’t explicitly say if the team will be without Morgan, its third cornerback. If the Orange will be, Shafer did discuss other defensive backs stepping into the role.

Brandon Reddish and Julian Whigham are listed on SU’s depth chart as the starting cornerbacks, as has been the case all season. Morgan is behind Whigham and Corey Winfield, who moved from wide receiver to cornerback during training camp, is behind Reddish.

Other options include freshmen Antwan Cordy, Cordell Hudson and Juwan Dowels, sophomore Joe Stanard and junior Eric Jackson, all of whom aren’t listed on the depth chart for the Notre Dame game.

“Wayne was improving and he’s kind of the third guy in the rotation,” Shafer said. “Now you adjust to the elements and get that next guy in there, and give him an opportunity play.

“So we’ll have some guys in there getting a few more reps than they have in the past … I feel bad for Wayne, anytime a youngster has an injury you feel just horrible. But you also know that’s part of the game.”
