Syracuse remains winless after 2-0 loss to Penn State

Syracuse suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon by falling to Penn State, 2-0, after tying Missouri 0-0 in the first game of the season on Friday. The Orange (0-1-1) went winless in both games of the Penn State Invitational at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pennsylvania.

The game was knotted at zero at halftime, but the Nittany Lions broke through for two goals in the second half. The two goals came within five minutes of each other, in the 48th and 53rd minutes, and PSU quickly put SU in a deep second-half deficit.

Penn State’s first goal came off a rebound by Mallory Weber. Five seconds earlier, Raquel Rodriguez’s shot was saved by Syracuse goalie MacKenzie Moranz, but Weber got the rebound by the near post and scored.

Weber also scored the Nittany Lions’ second goal off an assist from Rodriguez.

In the first half, Syracuse took two shots while Penn State took five. In the decisive second half, the Nittany Lions outshot the Orange, 12-1.

Moranz made seven saves for Syracuse and sophomore defender Maddie Iozzi received a yellow card.

The Orange will play at Albany on Friday at 7 p.m. SU has a 5-0-1 all-time record against the Great Danes dating back to 2003.
