Lingering hip injury ends Krautman’s Syracuse career

Senior kicker Ross Krautman will not play in the upcoming season, Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer announced in his Syracuse media day press conference on Saturday.

Krautman played in just two games last season before sitting out SU’s last 11 games with a hip injury. Junior Ryan Norton took over and made 10-of-15 field goal attempts with a long of 44 yards, and the hope was that Krautman’s hip would heal in time for the upcoming season. But Shafer said Saturday that the kicker’s rehabilitation didn’t play out as the team, and he, desired.

“You guys all know Ross had a hip injury and some surgery,” Shafer said to reporters Saturday. “We were really hopeful he was going to make it back. But it’s continued to be a bother to him and chronic, and he’s had a lot of pain with it. He made the decision that he’s going to have to put the cleats up.”

Before the hip injury hampered his senior season, Krautman had put together a decorated collegiate career. After tying a program record with 18 field goals as a freshman, he was named a Sporting News and Rivals.com Freshman All-American and to the All-Big East second team. He also made 16 consecutive field goals that season, which tied a team record set by Gary Anderson in 1981. He led the Big East with a 78.9 field-goal percentage as a sophomore, and played in all 13 games as a junior.

Krautman ranks second on Syracuse’s all-time kicking percentage list at 78 percent (49-for-63), tied for third in field goals made with 49, fifth in points with 257 and fourth in PATs with 110. All those figures will now freeze in place.

Options to replace Krautman include Norton, who missed the spring game due to off-field infractions, and walk-ons Alex Hodgkinson and Evan Jakubowski.

Said Shafer at the press conference: “Impact is we lost a good kicker so the next guy up better have his ass ready to go.”
