Syracuse, Georgetown to continue basketball rivalry starting in 2015-16 season

Syracuse will renew its rivalry with Georgetown in basketball starting in 2015-16, according to an SU Athletics release.

The deal consists of a four-year home-and-home series, with Georgetown hosting in 2015-16, Syracuse in 2016-17, the Hoyas in 2017-18 and the Orange in 2018-19.

“Continuing this historically important rivalry has always been of the highest priority for us since our move to the (Atlantic Coast Conference),” SU Director of Athletics Daryl Gross said in the release. “…and something I know our players, coaches, fans and the entire SU community are excited about.”

The two former-Big East rivals didn’t play each other in the 2013-14 season after Syracuse’s move to the ACC and are also not scheduled to face off in the 2014-15.

Syracuse leads 49-41 in the all-time series, and won the last game between the two teams, a 58-55 victory, in the 2013 Big East tournament semifinals.

“Georgetown against Syracuse is one of the great rivalries in college basketball,” Georgetown head coach John Thompson III said in the release.  “From the days when my father was coaching against Coach (Jim) Boeheim to our most recent games, this is one of those games that generates passion from both sides.”

The Orange and Hoyas hold the second-highest attendance total in Carrier Dome history at 35,012, when then-No. 11 Georgetown knocked off then-No. 8 Syracuse on Feb. 23, 2013.

That was the final Big East regular-season game between the two teams, and only 35,446 fans that attended the the Syracuse-Duke game on Feb. 1 of this past season ranks higher.

“The games in that series have been played at a remarkably high level over the years,” SU head coach Jim Boeheim said in the release.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of playing Georgetown again.”
