One person arrested in connection to Chase Bank robbery near campus

UPDATED: Aug. 18, 2013 at 12:27 a.m.

A Syracuse man with an extensive criminal record — and on parole for bank robbery — was arrested on Saturday for robbing a bank near campus.

Syracuse police arrested Mark Evans, 54, of Gifford Street, and charged him with robbery and grand larceny — both felonies — for slipping a note to a teller at Chase Bank demanding money. The bank is located at 649 S. Crouse Ave., which is less than five minutes away from Syracuse University.

Police said Evans has two prior arrests for robbing banks, and was paroled in early August for a previous bank robbery.

Evans took a taxi to the bank, and handled the teller a threatening note, police said, at about 10:10 a.m.

After, he got back into the taxi, and a police officer later spotted him at South Warren and East Onondaga streets.

He made several attempts to get away from the officer, police said, and was then tased. Money from the bank was found on him, police said.

No one was injured at the bank, and Evans is expected to be arraigned Sunday in Syracuse City Court.
