Syracuse hires Clark to join McIntyre’s coaching staff for 2013 season

Former Syracuse forward Louis Clark will join Syracuse’s staff for the 2013 season as an undergraduate assistant coach, head coach Ian McIntyre said.

“He was a big part of what the team’s accomplished over the last couple of years and he certainly could provide a lot of experience to our guys,” McIntyre said. “He’s a very popular character. I think he has a very important role to play this fall.”

Clark is looking to finish his undergraduate degree in SU’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management in the fall, McIntyre said. He left school a semester early in December, hoping to be drafted into Major League Soccer. Clark wasn’t drafted though, and is currently playing soccer in Melbourne, Australia. He confirmed via LinkedIn that he’ll return to Syracuse and help the team this fall.

After winning five games combined in 2010 and 2011 the Orange enjoyed a breakout 2012 season despite being predicted to finish last in the Big East Red Division.

Last year’s undergraduate assistants, Phil Boerger and Dan Summers, have graduated, the head coach said, and opened up a spot for Clark. The former striker started all but one game of his two-year SU career after transferring from Ashland University in 2011.

“It’s a great way for him to finish his schooling and get his feet wet with some coaching with a very young team,” McIntyre said. “This is a chance for him to provide some leadership to our young squad.”

SU finished 14-6-1 and advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament, the first Sweet 16 berth in program history. McIntrye and assistants Jukka Masalin and Mike Miller won Big East Coaching Staff of the Year for their success.

Clark, a Brighton, England native, started all 21 games for the Orange in 2012 and tallied 12 points. Now his job is to help carry Syracuse’s success into 2013.

“We’ve got some new faces in midfield and up front and he’ll be working with those guys,” McIntyre said. “Coaching is not just about the X’s and O’s. It’s about providing a presence in the locker room and I think Louis can help us in that respect.”
