USC hires former Florida Gulf Coast head coach Enfield

Southern California announced late Monday that Andy Enfield, who led Florida Gulf Coast on an incredible run in the NCAA Tournament, has been hired as the Trojans’ next head coach.

Enfield led the Eagles to the Sweet 16, where it fell to Florida. FGCU was the first school since 1987 to win its first two games in its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The run launched Florida Gulf Coast into the national spotlight, and Enfield into the sights of USC.

Enfield’s hiring, though, has an effect on Syracuse. Assistant coach Mike Hopkins, a Los Angeles native, interviewed for the job and was considered a strong candidate to get the job.

Hopkins is expected to take over for Jim Boeheim after he retires.
